The Pink Tide Turns Black: The failure of the two-step strategy in Bolivia

Image
The "pink tide" movement in Latin America continues to disintegrate, this time in Bolivia. This is at least the second time it's disintegration has lead to Fascism. While in Brazil Fascism presented itself in the misogynist caudillo strong man of Jair Bolsonaro, in Bolivia it presents itself in the pronouncements of the misogynist, nationalist, religious zealotry of Fernando Camacho. Some on the left have called for support of the Morales government against the Fascists and have argued that now is not "the right time" to criticize it. This ignores that the Fascism of Camacho and his coup are the product of the failures of Morales and his "Movement Toward Socialism" party. Camacho, who is the president of Santa Cruz's "Civic Committee" has invoked god and the bible in calling on Morales to resign (which he recently did, though not in written form). He argues for a classic Fascist vision of national rival for Bolivia through the strengt...

Anarcho-syndicalism In Indonesia

Image
Anarcho-syndicalism does not have a long history in Indonesia. It's left is dominated by reformist-electoral Marxists. Despite this an Indonesian Anarcho-syndicalist movement has cropped up to engage in serious activity. The organization which represents this movement is Persaudaraan Pekerja Anarko Sindikalis (Anarcho-syndicalist Comradeship of Workers). As expected the Indonesian government has taken a repressive approach to the Anarcho-syndicalists. The latest form of repression was for the Indonesian government to declare the Anarcho-syndicalists a threat to the state and blame them for the actions of teenage insurrectionist Anarchists who caused property damage. In addition to the repressive government the Anarcho-syndicalists also have to deal with reformist and bureaucratic unions. These unions, like similar unions all around the world, ...

How Pink Tide Failed Brazil

Image
Brazil’s runoff election has been won by the right wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro. Among Bolsonaro’s less than savory traits are colossal misogyny, and nostalgia for Brazil’s military dictatorship. This is naturally a dark time for Brazil’s working class and oppressed people. Regardless, Bolsonaro did not fall from the sky. His victory was the direct result of the failure of the so called “Pink Tide” in Latin America. At the turn of the 20th century Latin American social movements in resistance to neoliberal policies of exploitation lead to the election of left-wing officials and governments. This has been called “Pink Tide”. From Pink Tide came significant left-wing governments on the continent such as that of Correa in Ecuador, Morales in Bolivia, and Chavez to Maduro in Venezuela. These new leftist regimes were suppose to be popular governments that actively resisted neoliberalism. They were suppose to create economically self-sufficient nations. If the goals of Pink Tide gove...
